# Words used on this site
**BIOS**, or **firmware**
: A small program inside a console. It starts the games.
**Emulator**
: An app that acts like a console.
**Core**
: One emulator inside RetroArch. RetroArch uses a different core for each
console.
**Setup**
: What you play with: RetroArch, Batocera, EmuDeck and others.
**BIOS folder**
: The folder where your setup looks for BIOS files.
**Pack**
: The ZIP, sometimes in parts, with one setup's BIOS files. Made for the
setups most people download.
**Platform**
: A setup, as the project's data calls it.
**ZIP**
: One file that holds many files. You unzip it to get them out.
**Terminal**
: A window where you type commands.
**Installer**
: The small program the command starts. It fills your BIOS folder.
**Hash**
: A fingerprint of a file's contents. A different file gets a different hash.
**MD5** / **SHA-1**
: Two kinds of hash, a file's fingerprint. Setups that check files list one.
**Region**
: Where a console was sold: Japan, North America, Europe.
**Required** and **optional**
: Required: games do not start without it. Optional: games start anyway.
**Game data**
: Files from your own copy of a PC game, like Doom. Not a BIOS.
